BREATHING SPACES: Carbon-Negative Pasture and Forest Management in Moldova

Publication date: 2016

With EU funding and UNDP support, the Clima East Pilot Project in Moldova is implementing management plans which are rehabilitating forests and pastures. Restored areas will improve forage yields and livestock production, reduce pressure on degraded areas, and improve wildlife habitat. The forest and pasture restoration activities are being delivered side-by-side with initiatives which contribute to the local economy, including developing eco-tourism trails and attracting folk festivals and cultural activities to the region. Improved ecosystem services, such as crop pollination, flood and storm protection, and water filtration serve to promote buy-in from the surrounding communities, who are noticing better yields and greater demand for their products.
